5K iMac "target display mode" hack
Heard a discussion of converting the 27" 5K iMac to an external display (wanted that monitor for years!) on Gruber’s Talk Show, working on pulling together the parts listed by Quinn Nelson to do the build myself. Definitely not a $200 project (yes, that’s the cost of the computer… parts are another $300-$400), but much cheaper than the alternatives!
"You are being misled about renewable energy technology"
Saw this video making the rounds last week (saw it posted on KDO), sat down to watch myself. 90 minutes long, but well worth the watch. I appreciated the economic approach to renewables and the reinforcement of gasoline as a single-use consumable… while there’s some infrastructure cost, an astonishing amount of work is required to produce every gallon of gas used. Solar electric is free so long as the sun shines. Obviously that’s a reductive statement, but the maths work out pretty darn well long-term…
The first 60 minutes are a great video on the investment advantages to renewables (mostly solar); the final 30 minutes are an amazing indictment on our current situation. Amazing (depressing) how far we’ve drifted in a decade.
This is my first post, partly a test, partly a chance for me to own my words (I have my work-focused TIL blog on GitHub, but that’s still isn’t really mine). I’d like to work more on linking to interesting articles and jotting down my thoughts, particularly the one’s that aren’t focused on work.
